As the summer draws to a close, we know that for most Americans, the Labor Day weekend is the last chance for a summer road trip, community cookout or pool party. However, as much fun and relaxation as the holiday brings us, it also comes with dangers that often go unrecognized and unacknowledged. Only second to Memorial Day, the Labor Day weekend is one of the deadliest holidays for drivers.
Although law enforcement tends to crack down on distracted driving, drunk driving and drowsy driving this holiday, traffic accident statistics show that the number of injuries and fatalities caused by reckless and careless driving are unignorable.
Distracted, Drunk and Drowsy
Distracted, drunk, and drowsy drivers are a threat to everyone on the road. When an impaired driver makes the decision to start their ignition, they are devaluing their safety and the safety of passengers, pedestrians and other motorists. The National Safety Council estimates more than 40,000 people died in motor vehicle accidents caused by impaired driving and speeding last year. To combat this, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and other law enforcement agencies will be on extra patrol during the holiday weekend, looking for signs of drunk or impaired drivers and removing them from our roads.

Accident Prevention
Before you go out for the night, ask yourself if you plan to consume alcohol or are staying out late into the night.
- If you know that alcohol will be served and you can assume you will drink, it is a good idea to choose to carpool with a designated sober driver or even opt to use a rideshare service to get you to and from your destination.
- Curfews aren’t just for teenagers. Set yourself a time to get home or make arrangements for an overnight stay. You may think you’re awake enough to driver after a long night with friends, but once you leave the party scene, your body may suddenly decide otherwise.
- Set your GPS, choose your playlist and place your phone on Do Not Disturb mode if it is available. Multitasking is great, but not on the road. Set everything you need ahead of time so you can focus on driving if you are behind the wheel.
- Buckle your seatbelt as soon as you get in the car. Seatbelts have proven to reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about half.
